From My Seat

"Opinions are like a***holes, eveyone has one" - so let's hear yours'.

I don't get it. I try to analyse what's going on on the pitch. I like to think I know better than Aitor Karanka about some things at least and could make a few very helpful suggestions like every fan does. Nothing wrong with that. It's irrelevant of course unless I'm given the job one day and able to give my dream team a spin. Fact is he sees everything and is far better placed than any fan to get things right, he probably is also better qualified too.

The majority probably wouldn't have picked Daryl Murphy to start on Saturday. They would have felt justified in that opinion at half-time too. He looked no better than he had for the last half of last season. Everyone, probably even those who would have picked him to start with, would have been happy for him to be the prime candidate to jump in the shower at half-time without much argument. However Karanka persevered and probably told him a few things whilst he had the chance in the privacy of the dressing room. Either way the results within minutes spoke for themselves. Murphy turned and drove towards the box before giving the ball to Dias, Osborn and then the mercurial Guedioura to cross the ball back onto his swivelling bonce and direct it into the inside of the Bristol net with a sense of inevitability. Point proved. His supporters now had the ammunition to abuse those less convinced about his selection and the 'total hypocrites' who wouldn't have selected him celebrated like it was 1999 all over again.

Murphy did trudge off to the sidelines some time later but by then he had put in some of the best minutes in a Forest shirt and bolstered his stock after many games with very little other than hope to support his presence on the pitch. So where does that leave it? I'm absolutely delighted he performed so well. Lewis Grabban's suspected lack of match sharpness also suggests that maybe Murphy will hold onto his shirt again tonight against WBA. It's a win-win! This is exactly why you have a squad. You support the whole team. Of course you can have your opinion about who deserves selection but accept that maybe, just maybe, Aitor is best placed to have the final decision.

Karanka has built a squad with options in every position. He wants competition for places, options and cover for when injuries come along. He doesn't need the wisdom of Solomon. No need to cut Grabban and Murphy in half to keep the fans happy. He can pick one, then the other based on how they perform and the qualities they can bring to the team to do the job necessary. The players need to buy into this 100% and so should the fans. It's embarrassing seeing people having vicious arguments about a position when you support the same team. Sure, have an opinion, disagree and have a joke about it but whatever the debate is about understand you want whatever outcome to suit the club rather than prove you right - remember that really is the most important t thing surely! So I am delighted Murphy delivered on Saturday and hope he carries on doing it despite my misgivings about his place at the club, let alone in the team. However nothing would make me more happy than him carrying on where he left off for the rest of the season. That would be brilliant and would actually not undermine my opinion that he might have been more than a little bit lucky to still be in the game. Others aren't, so good luck to him, grab your chance with both hands Daryl. Nothing wrong with that. You're only as good as your last game. The squad should be used to rest players when they need it and give others a chance, use the great players there's not room for in the first XI off the bench to change the game when needed. Make the most of the strength of the squad, it's a squad game rather than a team one. Everyone needs to appreciate that.

There was no room for Hillal Soudani on the bench on Saturday. I think his presence might have been appreciated the way things panned out but it's a nice problem to have. Similarly at centre half you couldn't argue about whoever gets selected out of the four options available. That's awkward because you don't want to make changes for the sake of it. All four have great pedigree and need to be used effectively to ensure their development alongside the effectiveness of the defence as a whole. It will be fascinating to see how things develop. I've had the idea a back three with advanced wing backs like England employed this summer might suit Forest too depending on how the season goes possibly. Either way team selection is going to be a topic of great debate this season so let's try and get this right.

Everyone can have an opinion, deserves respect and with football you can often be right when you're totally wrong anyway - as soon as the evidence is overwhelming the tables are ready to turn. Let's remember what the most important thing is. The success of the team on the pitch is the main thing. Whoever gets picked we support them 100% whether we agree with their selection or not right? We hope that they succeed whether or not we would have picked them right? There's no future in the whingey old git in Row X being completely right when he whines about all the mistakes players make at every opportunity. All that gets you is nowhere in the league table. We need to support whoever the boss selects and support them for every minute of every match. We can trust Karanka to wield the axe when necessary. He's only interested in one thing whether or not you are. Unlike you and I he's the one whose opinion actually matters and we should all hope gets it right, whether or not we agree! But let's keep this in perspective. Have opinions but support the team 100% whoever gets picked. If you're wrong about someone and they actually do well, that is absolutely brilliant. COYR.
