Season Review - The Attack

Last season was hard for everyone. Fans and players had very little to cheer about but the strikers probably had the toughest time being largely asked to plough a lone furrow and feed of a diet of gruel. Whilst the chances did come according to the stats the quality of them was lacking. Generally they were created slowly, predictably and therefore often easy to defend, but in any case…

Ben Brereton - Brereton had made a few incredibly exciting appearances the previous season and seemed on a completely different level. It’s obviously been a learning curve for the youngster to play regularly and he has suffered somewhat from that shock to the system. He’s had crises of confidence and not scored anywhere near the number of goals you would imagine, but these are all part of life for a centre forward and he will have learned a lot. He’s also delivered a few outstanding performances, including an eye-catching one against Arsenal in The Cup. You have to imagine his talent for goalscoring has not deserted him and will become more apparent in a team that provides him with better service and his confidence returns. He has to stop trying to contrive fouls quite so obviously, I’m sure refs and defenders will have marked his card by now and needs to make conscious effort to stay on his feet as a first instinct. There was one occasion he appeared to forego a clear shot at goal and reverse to engineer a penalty. Success breeds confidence and he should benefit from a season amongst a far brighter array of talent this time out though. He still has a time and a big future ahead of him.

Daryl Murphy - He started the season with a bang but ended it with barely a whimper. Whatever the reason was he provided nothing after Easter and produced some of the most passive and inept performances I’ve ever seen on a regular basis. On that evidence he would have been the first to show the door but Karanka appears to be a fan as he truly must be to have enough patience with him to give him another chance. Maybe he will take it but it must surely be a last one. He has proved a capable performer in The Championship but he needs to deliver next season to avoid following those already shown the exit door who have deserved it far less. With the team being built over the summer he will know he has no excuses for failing to deliver. Hopefully he takes the chance and repays the faith Karanka obviously seems to have in him. He should consider himself very lucky and repay the trust placed in him that he has really done little to warrant.

Apostolos Vellios - Throughout his time at Forest he’s been an enigma. Again, last season he was given a lot of chances in preseason and appeared to have done everything to grab a place in the team but it never materialised. Hardly played the whole season but managed to perform reasonably well on the few occasions he was called upon. He’s now set to leave and his whole time at Forest will probably remain one of those mysteries to fans maybe as much as to the player himself. Something obviously hasn’t quite clicked but it’s hard to see why. He seemed to put in enough effort, have some ability and at least score goals but maybe he never quite fitted in with any of the systems managers were trying to employ. Has seemed to be a popular member of the squad and will hopefully have success in the future wherever that may lie.

Zach Clough - Forest had him on their radar for years and seemed to have made an astute signing after a string of superb performances following his arrival on the Trent. He’s no doubt a confidence player and a luxury - someone you need to give freedom to play and he was shackled, played out of position and lost form, then his place. He never got it back and even his fans had trouble seeing where he could fit in and enough of a reason to try. Ultimately another victim of an awful campaign and was unable to even reignite his career whilst on loan back at Bolton. He remained popular with the supporters and will hopefully find a new club and regain his form. An expensive mistake for the club though. Had a very poor hand dealt to him but wasn’t able to make anything of the chance he did have so cannot really complain in the final analysis. A missed opportunity for all concerned.

Jason Cummings - Arrived with some sense of anticipation. An exciting young talent and a character with an eye for goal. Shot on sight and no doubt has some ability but never settled. Truth is he was never happy away from Scotland. From the outside you would never anticipate that being an issue but there’s no doubt that he never settled and will now hopefully find a route home with our best wishes. Sometimes these things just don’t work out. Somewhat surprisingly has now gone out on loan to Peterborough but this will give him the chance to reboot his career that he will hopefully take, wherever that might ultimately take him.

There were a few others who hardly featured at all - Dejagah and Fuentes both had very short cameos abruptly ended by injury. A shame as both came to prove themselves and were completely denied the opportunity to do so. Their Forest careers have probably ended before they got going, another sad aspect to a season to forget.

Well that’s it. Let’s hope the review of the season that’s only a few days away is much more positive when we rake over the embers next summer.
